NTT Communications to Address the Role of Global Carriers in Network Security at International Telecoms Week 2019

NTT Com’s Michael Wheeler to Participate in Panel Focused on How Wholesale Carriers Prepare for and Mitigate DDoS Attacks

NEW YORK and ATLANTA – June 24, 2019NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the global data and IP services arm of Fortune Global 500 telecom leader NTT (TYO: 9432), will offer expert analysis on network security at the International Telecoms Week (ITW) 2019 taking place in Atlanta, Georgia, June 23-26.

Michael Wheeler, executive vice president of the NTT Communications Global IP Network at NTT America, will join industry leaders on the panel “Mitigating Security Threats as a Wholesale Carrier” on Monday, June 24, at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The session will focus on the challenges created by the constant increase in the average size of DDoS attacks as well as the impact of Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled applications and devices on overall network security. The panelists will also discuss the various solutions that global carriers offer, either individually or by combining efforts with other providers, to improve network security and industry collaboration.

Mr. Wheeler has over 25 years of executive, sales management and operational experience in the Internet and communications industries. In his current role at NTT America, he is responsible for all financial, engineering, operational and customer relationship activities for the Global IP Network business unit.

“At NTT Com, network security is one of our top priorities,” says Mr. Wheeler. “We look at security as protecting not only our Global IP Network but also our customers’ networks. DDoS attacks are among the most serious and pervasive threats that we see and we are continually assessing new tools and tactics to help prevent and mitigate their impact.”

According to Mr. Wheeler, this is an issue that requires industrywide collaboration to overcome. “Historically, there has been a precedent of long-standing cooperation between tier-1 players that support the broader Internet and the security measures used to protect it,” he adds. “DDoS attacks are by definition distributed in nature, coming from various parts of the world across different networks. It’s therefore critical to work with other network operators to address those situations.”

Recognizing the continuously increasing size and complexity of DDoS attacks, NTT Com offers its Global IP Network customers a comprehensive portfolio of DDoS Protection Services (DPS) and gives them the option to choose the level of mitigation support that best fits their network security strategy.

“There is no one-size-fits-all solution, so enabling a variety of options available to the marketplace is vital as NTT Com believes network security is a critical and constantly evolving challenge to address,” Mr. Wheeler concludes.

ITW is the annual meeting for the global wholesale telecommunications community, bringing together participants from around the world and providing the opportunity to learn and network with industry peers, suppliers and customers. NTT Com will also participate at the Communications Infrastructure Summit 2019, taking place simultaneously with ITW. Shawn Morris, VP of Systems, Applications & Software of the NTT Communications Global IP Network at NTT America, will be a panelist in the session “Using Software to Unlock the Next Phase of Network Evolution” focused on network automation and software-defined networking (SDN), on Wednesday, June 26, at 3:45 p.m. ET. In its first edition, the Communications Infrastructure Summit is expected to gather wholesale carriers, fiber providers, data center operators, and wireless, software and hardware companies to discuss industry collaboration and competition.
